Engineers are the reason healthcare has improved so dramatically over the years. Advances in medical technology are due to the work of engineers and the development of devices that help save lives and improve the quality of life for others. The Crossrail project in London, for example, is creating a new transportation system for the entire Southeast, allowing for shorter travel times and easier connections. The existing transport system wouldn't be what it's today without engineers.


Many people are surprised at how much influence engineers have when disasters occur around the world. Engineers use equipment like drones to locate and reach survivors, help build emergency shelters and safe water and waste disposal systems. They use their knowledge to get transportation systems back up and running, help safely demolish and rebuild buildings, and get water, power and heating systems back up and running. Engineers also help warn of future disasters by working to develop early warning and detection systems, and by developing materials that allow buildings to withstand the effects of such extreme conditions.


It's impossible to say what impact engineers will continue to have in the future. Engineering jobs are in high demand, and it's exciting to know that as new technologies proliferate, so do new jobs. It's very easy to overlook the work of engineers around the world, but it's obvious that they're at the forefront of technology in everything from cell phones to buildings to major disasters.
