The Importance of Architectural Lighting - A360 Architects

The importance of architectural lighting

Lighting plays a critical role in how people experience and understand architecture. Whether buildings and structures are naturally or artificially illuminated, lighting is the medium that allows us to see and appreciate the beauty of the buildings around us.

Lighting can add emotional value to architecture - it helps create an experience for those who spend time in the space. Where would architecture be without lighting? Would it still have the same impact? No, it would not. Whether it's daylight or artificial lighting, light draws attention to the textures, colours and shapes of a space and helps architecture serve its intended purpose. Vision is the most important sense with which we perceive architecture, and lighting enhances the way we perceive architecture even more.

To successfully balance lighting and architecture, it is important to consider three key aspects of architectural lighting: (1) aesthetics, (2) function, and (3) efficiency. For aesthetics, designers and architects focus on the emotional impact that the balance between lighting and architecture will have on occupants. Here, designers determine how they want people to feel when they move through a space. This aspect is especially important for retail stores: exterior lighting should draw customers in, and interior lighting should leave them in awe as they walk through the doors, not just showcase the products.

The second aspect, function, cannot be ignored. We want the lighting to look a certain way, but we also need to make sure it serves its most important purpose - to help us see. Areas should be lit in a way that makes occupants feel safe when moving around a room or an entire building. They should be able to see the floor and walls around them, which should give them a sense of security.

The last aspect is very important in this day and age of green building and the sustainability movement. It is one thing to design a stunning lighting scheme, but it is another to design a stunning scheme that is also incredibly energy efficient. This can be achieved by ensuring that the majority of light reaches its destination and less light is wasted. By reducing the amount of wasted light, the building becomes more efficient. One simple way to accomplish this is to install LEDs instead of fluorescent lighting. Because of the technology, less light is wasted with LEDs than with fluorescent tubes because they are directional.
