Procrastination. What is procrastination? Procrastination (in case you do not know) is an act of delaying or putting off something: be it a task or an action to be done. Now, humans are not perfect, so we all tend to procrastinate often. But I am not here to encourage that, but to help you avoid it by showing you some ways to avoid procrastination. Putting something off or putting it off until later or someday can be bad for you in every way, from the quality of the work done to the possibility that the task will be affected by unforeseen future events. That's why you should not rely on tomorrow. Despite the short-term relief, putting off tasks can cause stress, health, anxiety and psychological problems in the long run. Let us start with some ways to avoid procrastination, which I will list for you below. If you feel that you procrastinate enough, you should try these tips.
1.Make yourself a schedule, create a timeline.
It's always a good practice to get organized by making a list of the order of things or tasks that need to be done first and exactly how much time you will spend on them, because this will save you time and keep track of your time and overall tasks.
2. Set a deadline.
Why do we complete a task only at the end of the day, at the eleventh hour? It's because we get pressured at that time and feel obligated to get that first priority done. What if you do not have a submission date or a deadline for the task? Then what will you do after an eternity? So set a deadline, even if you do not have one, and stick to it, that way you will stay on track.
3. Keep away from all distractions.
As you know, one of the main causes of procrastination is distraction. We stray from our task because we are preoccupied with everything that is going on around us. Clear your mind and think as if there is nothing more important than what you already have on your plate to get done. Sit quietly in a room or an appropriate place and stay away from social media, games, TV or anything that might distract you, including people.
4. Do the difficult things first.
Doing the difficult tasks first will keep you consistently on task, as they obviously take more time than the other tasks. If you do the hard and difficult tasks first, you will be more confident in completing the rest of the tasks on time. However, if you do the easy tasks, you may lose the concentration and energy (after doing them) for the hard tasks and end up putting them off or postponing them. So, do the difficult tasks first.
5. Take a break. When you are halfway through the tasks at hand and feel exhausted or have lost focus, take a short break to distract yourself and re-energize. Go outside, exercise, get some fresh air but remember that you are not done yet, eat something, listen to music and then come back. You will feel much better with more energy.
6. Drop the excuses.
" I have to run to the... " or "I first have to do the... first" or "I have to have the spirit and mood for it first" etc. Drop those excuses and just visit DO IT. You may feel the need to be in the right mood and wait for it, but believe me, this is procrastination initiating itself in this way. It will make you wait and wait until you end up feeling bad. The right time never comes, trust me.
7. Reward yourself with incentives.
Incentives for anyone who gets their work done can be useful. So why not use this tactic on yourself? Just tell yourself that after you finish the task, you can watch an episode of The Big Bang Theory or the new Netflix show, but not while drunk, or that you can check social media, but that should be contingent on completing the task you set out to do. Remember that sticking to the schedule is a top priority, as mentioned earlier. 8. Tell someone about your plans or goals.
It can be helpful to tell someone close to you about your tasks or goals, as this will help you be consistent and successful in making an impression or being ready when others ask where you are on your course.
