7 The most effective interior design marketing strategies for 2023

1. Expand your community with Blogging

Blogging has been proven to bring in more customers and is a component of many interior design marketing strategies. A study by Hubspot showed that companies that blog regularly get 67% more leads than those that do not.

  • A blog can be very useful for your interior design business for many reasons, including:
  • Showcase your skills as an interior designer
  • Improve traffic to your website through SEO and social media
  • Define your brand positioning and offerings
  • Using blogs as part of your 2023 marketing plan can turn your design business into a customer acquisition machine.

One of the most important factors in blogging is to not be too 'sales" in your articles. - that will likely turn off many readers. Instead, feature your interior design projects under more general article titles, for example, you can feature your own projects in a blog titled '10 Inspiring Bedroom Designs for 2023."

This way, you can establish yourself as an authority in your niche, drive relevant traffic to your blog, and attract hundreds of potential customers to your website over time.

Plus, blogging is a great way to make new contacts in the industry. You can make contacts with other designers, bloggers, and brands that can help each other in the future.

2. Build a tribe with email marketing

The single biggest investment you can ever make in your interior design marketing strategy is building an email list.

The truth is that over 99% of your website visitors will not become potential customers on their first visit, and almost 100% of them will never come back, so adding some of them to your email list is an absolute must.

Your email list will become a source of returning, high-quality customers who love your work before you even start working with them.

Plus, it's insanely cheap to set up.

With ConvertKit, you can get started for free. You can get up to 1,000 subscribers before you have to pay a dime for the tool - that's amazing,

Then simply send out a monthly newsletter with your latest blog posts, project photos, trends you are watching, etc. This should not take more than a few hours per month.

3. How to grow your email list

Pop-Ups

Yes, you may find these pop-ups annoying, but the truth is that they work REALLY! On average, between 3 and 10 out of every 100 people who see an email sign-up window will fill it out and sign up.

There are many tools you can use for pop-ups, one of the best is Sumo (which has a free plan). This tool allows you to fully customize the pop-up with headline, text, call to action, images, etc. - and is super easy to use at the same time.

Landing Pages

Using dedicated landing pages to collect subscribers for your blog's email list is a very smart move.

Creating landing pages can be incredibly effective. Some landing pages are so good at converting visitors into subscribers that over half of the visitors to that page become email subscribers.

Landing pages give you a central place to drive traffic and the opportunity to sell what your subscribers are getting.

Basically, some forms on your website will get some people to sign up for your newsletter. That's absolutely fine if you are short on time, but to really drive the numbers up, you need to give them the incentive to leave their email address.

4. The content upgrade

The faster you grow your email list, the faster you'll get more visitors and more interior design clients from your email list.

The content upgrade, a term coined by Brian Dean of Backlinko, essentially switches your lightbox pop-ups to supercharge and can increase the number of people who subscribe by up to five times. So instead of getting 5 subscribers out of every 100 visitors. You can get up to 25 additional subscribers from the same traffic!

Content upgrades are uniquely designed to lead magnets that can be downloaded based on the post a visitor is reading, providing the reader with a highly relevant additional resource. For example, if you are writing a post about hygiene, you could add a special upgrade with the ultimate hygiene checklist.

Remember, you need to give your potential customers a really good reason to sign up, and keep them engaged

5. Showcase your testimonials

Having reviews right on your website can do wonders for your interior design business. It will make you stand out from other interior designers in your area or niche and get you noticed as one of the best.

It can be a straightforward interior design marketing strategy that you can use once you have a steady stream of interior design clients.

Simply ask your clients to write a review for the service you provided - it is important that you do this immediately after the project is completed. The longer you wait to do this, the less chance the client will leave you a review.

Here you can present your reviews:

  • Homepage - present the best 2-3 reviews on the homepage of your website, because these are read by most people.
  • Info page - present 3-5 additional testimonials on your info page. These are good if they say more about you than about the client project itself.
  • Portfolio pages - if you feature a project on your website and have a review from that client, be sure to add it to the portfolio page on your website.
  • Testimonial page - once you have at least 10 reviews, create a dedicated testimonial page on your website and list all your reviews (even if they are elsewhere on your website).

6. Focus on Instagram

The best social media platform to focus on as an interior designer in 2023 is Instagram.

It fits perfectly into interior designers' digital marketing strategy because it focuses heavily on images.

The platform can be an incredibly powerful tool to increase awareness of your interior design business and showcase your style to potential clients around the world (perfect for interior design online).

Consistency is key. When someone lands on your profile, they should understand exactly what you are about. The style that emanates from your account through your posts should be consistent with your service offerings and website - which can make the difference between people following you or not.

The quality of your images needs to be top-notch, and you should also include some gallery posts and videos to see what resonates best with your audience. High-resolution images can help people visit your profile and hit the "Follow" button.

Depending on how much time you have, you should try to publish the same number of posts every day or every week. It's better to post something every three days than to post three times a day for a week and then nothing for a month. Using tools like Later can speed up the process because you can schedule multiple posts in advance, which makes it easier to maintain consistency.

When posting, be sure to use the right hashtags. Users can search for Instagram posts using hashtags. This means they can find new accounts (like yours!) to follow. Using the right hashtags for your interior design business is a great way to attract new followers.

Especially if you are just starting out, you need to share with other accounts to draw people to your profile. Like, comment and DM accounts similar to yours to add value and make good connections.

7. Offer free consultations

A very common question I get asked by aspiring interior designers is whether or not they should offer free consultations.

There is a lot of conflicting advice on this topic, so I thought I'd give my opinion.

For me, it's simply a matter of time and revenue.

If you offer a free consultation, that could make the difference between a potential client contacting you or another designer. I have also seen it get great results in paid ads (Facebook and Google Ads) when used to promote services.

On the other hand, offering free consultations can lead to you getting more inquiries from lesser prospects that do not convert into paying clients. This can be a time-waster and diminish your enthusiasm for your business.

8. Marketing advice for interior designers

If you are new. You probably have fewer clients taking up your time with current projects.

In this case, it makes sense to offer free consultations until you have built a solid client base that can refer business to you.

The best part is that you can always withdraw the offer in the future.

So try it out, and offer free consultations.

If it does not work out. Withdraw it.

My pro tip: Clearly define what a free consultation means to you and make that clear to your potential customers.

  • Define the duration (e.g. 30 minutes)
  • What will you discuss? (Overview of your process, suggested actions, etc.)
  • Have the potential customer fill out a detailed questionnaire in advance so you do not have to waste time asking the same questions over and over again; this also means the customer will be more engaged with the questionnaire.
  • Let us make 2023 a memorable year for your interior design business with these digital marketing plans.
