What are the benefits of Reiki and how does it work?

What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese energy healing technique. The predominant form of Reiki practiced around the world today, also known as Usui Reiki, was created by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. It's a complementary or alternative approach to health. Reiki doesn't directly cure illness or disease. Instead, it's used as a means to treat symptoms and improve overall well-being.

During a Reiki session, the practitioner places their hands either directly on you or directly over you to bring about healing. It's believed that the practitioner can stimulate the body's natural healing abilities.

Read on to learn more about the benefits and side effects of Reiki and what you can expect from a Reiki session.

5 Health Benefits of Reiki
1. Relieves pain, anxiety, and fatigue
According to a review of randomized trials by Trusted Source, Reiki can help relieve pain and anxiety, although more research is needed. It can also help reduce fatigue.

A 2015 study by Trusted Source found that people who were treated for cancer and received distance Reiki in addition to regular medical care had lower levels of pain, anxiety, and fatigue. These levels were significantly lower than the control group, which received medical care only. Participants received 30-minute sessions of distance Reiki for five days.

In another 2015 study, researchers examined the effects of Reiki on women after cesarean delivery. They found that Reiki significantly reduced pain, anxiety, and breathing rate in women 1-2 days after a C-section. The need for and the number of pain medications was also reduced. Reiki had no effect on blood pressure or pulse rate.

In a 2018 study, Trusted Source compared the use of Reiki with physical therapy for lower back pain relief in people with herniated disks. Both treatments were found to be equally effective in relieving pain, but Reiki was more cost-effective and resulted in faster treatment in some cases.

2. Treats depression
Reiki treatments can be used as part of a treatment plan to relieve depression. In a small 2010 study, researchers examined the effects of Reiki on older adults who suffered from pain, depression, or anxiety. Participants reported improvements in their physical symptoms, mood, and sense of well-being. They also reported more relaxation, increased curiosity, and improved levels of self-care.

Larger, more in-depth studies are needed to further explore these findings.

3. Improves quality of life
The positive effects of Reiki can enhance your overall well-being. Researchers found in a small 2016 study that Reiki can improve the quality of life of women with cancer. Women who received Reiki improved sleep patterns, self-confidence, and depression levels. They noted a sense of calm, inner peace, and relaxation.

Larger studies are needed to expand on these findings.

4. Boosts mood
Reiki can help improve mood by alleviating anxiety and depression. A 2011 study found that people who received Reiki treatment felt greater benefits to their mood than people who didn't. Study participants who received six 30-minute sessions over a period of two to eight weeks showed improvements in their mood.

5. May improve some symptoms and conditions
Reiki can also be used for treatment:

headaches, tension, insomnia, nausea
The relaxation response that occurs with Reiki can relieve these symptoms. However, specific research is needed to determine the effectiveness of Reiki in treating these symptoms and conditions.

Are there any risks or side effects?
Reiki is non-invasive and is considered a safe trustworthy source. It has no known harmful side effects. People with past trauma may find it uncomfortable to lie quietly in a dimly lit room with a close person.

Reiki isn't intended to replace a doctor-approved treatment plan.

What happens during a Reiki session?
A typical Reiki session lasts between 20 and 90 minutes. At your first appointment, you'll meet with your Reiki practitioner. You'll have a brief introduction or conversation about the process and your expectations or intentions. Let your Reiki practitioner know what symptoms you'd like treated or if there are any areas of your body you'd like them to focus on. Also, let the practitioner know if you have any injuries or are sensitive to the touch.

You'll be instructed to lie down on a treatment table or mat. You'll be covered with a blanket. Soft, relaxing music usually plays in the background. There is usually no talking during the session, but feel free to tell your therapist if you need anything to make you feel more comfortable or to share what you're experiencing.

The practitioner will move their hands around your body. They may touch you lightly or have their hands directly over your body.

You may feel sensations in the body such as heat or tingling. Some people report seeing visualizations such as colors or pictures, or memories appear. Try to let whatever comes up pass by without giving it too much importance. Your experience may deepen as you continue with Reiki.

How to prepare for your appointment
Dress in clean, loose-fitting, comfortable clothing. It's best to wear natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, or silk. Remove your shoes, jewelry, and glasses before your session, and keep your phone turned off or leave it behind.

What to expect after your appointment
Drink plenty of water after your session. Some people feel calm, peaceful, or energized. However, they may also feel tired.

How much does a Reiki session cost?
The cost of a Reiki session depends on where you live and how long the session lasts. In general, you should expect to pay $50 to $100 per session. This treatment is generally not covered by health insurance.

Are crystals used in Reiki?
Your therapist may use crystals during your Reiki session. Crystals are believed to add an additional healing element to the treatment by helping to release emotional, mental or spiritual blocks.

Crystals can be placed on or around your body, or you may be asked to hold a crystal. There is no research to support the use of crystals to enhance healing. However, some people claim that they have a calming effect and can help with healing.

Examples of crystals that can be used are:

rose quartz amethyst moonstone topaz tourmaline aquamarine
How to find a Reiki practitioner
You can find a Reiki practitioner near you by searching online. In some cases, you may also be able to get a referral from your doctor.

You can also get a referral from a yoga studio or massage practice. Make sure you feel comfortable with your Reiki practitioner, as it's important that you feel relaxed during your sessions.
